Windows Explorer Icon in Win7

I confess I don't much like it, preferring the "Computer" icon instead.

You can easily change it by getting the "Computer" icon from here:

C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll

Note, that in order to change the default icon in the taskbar, unpin explorer from the taskbar, change it in the the Start Menu, then repin it to the taskbar.

For setting up the quickstart menu, Directions for that are here: http://www.essjae.com/Computers/computers2.htm

Long delays in new site

I had planned to recreate my entire site at the end of 2008, but my wife and I were attempting to purchase a new house and sell ours.  Unfortunately, the sellers of the house we were buying backed out for some questionable reasons.

After a month and a half of vigorous house cleaning, painting, and various updates to make our house more saleable, we are still here and so is the old site.

Soon!  I promise!

I did add some new Windows 7 content in the Computers and Info section.

Website updated! No more pop-ups!

The culprit was the netstat free site counter.

Those pop-ups were practically viruses!  I've removed all the links from my site.

I also removed some google ad code that was no longer working.

Apologies for popups on the vpc.essjae.com page!

I recently visited my VPC page and it looks like one of my advertisers is using pop-ups.  I didn't know about this.  I will remove whatever is doing this as soon as I can.

Sorry for the inconvenience!!

searchfilterhost.exe using large percentage of CPU

After upgrading my work laptop to Vista Business to begin testing Vista I noticed that my CPU usage was really high and it was becuase of searchfilterhost.exe using about 50% of my CPU resources.

I found an easy solution, removing .xml files from the  .XML file extension from being indexed in the Indexing Options control panel.

Open control panel, click Indexing options-->Advanced-->File Types, scroll to near the end of the list and uncheck XML

Getting Vista to join an NT 4 Domain

Well, probably not too much demand for this, but I've still got a legacy domain to support until I can get everyone moved to the new AD.

I was able to find the info on this here:

http://www.ozzu.com/mswindows-forum/getting-vista-join-nt4-domain-t76122.html

To add Vista to the domain:

1. SRVMGR.EXE on the PDC and add the computer name of the Vista PC.

2. On Vista PC run, secpol.msc then Under Local Policies > Security Options, Change the following two settings

- Domain Member: Digitally Encrypt sign secure channel data (always) - change to disabled
- Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level - change to "Send LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negoitated"

----

I was able to successfully test this in VPC.  NT4 on a 3GHz Quadcore is crazy fast.  I had an NT4 PDC with SP6 and VMA in under an hour.

Toshiba M400 Recovery Partition Access

I needed to restore my Toshiba M400 Tablet to it's factory build at work today, but I'd forgotten to bring in my Restore DVDs.  Fortunately, I found a short-cut that allows you to restore the system directly from the hard drive.

Hold down '0' (zero) during boot and you'll go into the Toshiba recovery console.  About 30 minutes later I was running through the Windows XP initial boot questions.

Windows XP SP3 and failing Windows Updates

On my work notebook running XP I ran into the issue of WU failing after applying XP SP3.  I found that this solution:

http://www.itexperience.net/2008/05/23/automatic-updates-fail-after-installation-of-windows-xp-sp3/

Worked for me.  You're re-registering the following DLL-files.

Click Start, Run, and enter these commands individually:

regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
regsvr32 /s wups.dll
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

Dlink IP Cameras and Silverlight

Have a D-Link IP camera that just stopped working for no apparent reason and now you're getting an HTTP 400 message from it?

I've been fighting with this for quite some time, some of my systems work, some don't, some just seem to stop, resetting IE7 doesn't fix it.

The culprit is Silverlight.  Removing it, restores the cameras functionality.

If you have access to connect.microsoft.com, please go there and add your feedback that you can validate this and rate it's importance. Silverlight feedback is under Visual Studio, the existing bug ID is 340906.

Thanks GoGamer.com!!

I recently ordered a couple PC games from gogamer.com and wound up being the daily winner (iPod speaker set).  Cool, but I don't have an iPod.

Then I got an email on November 19th from GoGamer congratulating me on being the monthly winner (a 40GB Sony PS3)!!!!!

So, I am giving GoGamer a little free advertising here, since they've got good prices, and gave me a PS3!!  Nice x-mas present for me!

disclaimer...gogamer did not ask me to blog this, I just did 'cuz I got a PS3.

BTW, Spiderman3 in blue-ray looks awesome!
